SEO news: Week of February 1, 2021

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a fast-paced area of digital marketing. Staying on top of the latest news and developments in the industry is a critical part of success. With more information and less time than ever, it can be helpful to lean on the expertise and specialization of digital marketing professionals.

Since we spend a lot of time navigating the SEO world, we’re happy to share the most important SEO news items we come across. This week, we’ll cover some news from Google, SEMrush and DuckDuckGo.

Google Search Console updated its rich results report

On March 11, Google started changing some of its structured data requirements and reporting structure.

Google has changed its requirements for education and experience properties in structured data of job postings to reduce errors and ensure that postings are delivered to the correct target audience. The company has also taken measures to begin checking the validity of FAQ and Q&A structured data to ensure that the information is accurate and helpful to its users.

You may notice some fluctuations in performance while these changes roll out, but overall, these are beneficial changes for honest marketers.

SEMrush is planning to go public

After a few years of solid growth and an increase of revenue — which is especially impressive during a pandemic — SEMrush has announced that it is planning to go public on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker “SEMR.”

This is important news for SEO professionals as going public could increase SEMrush’s value, translating into improved services it can provide to its users. What it also means is that those who use SEMrush’s free tools can expect a heavier push from the company to convert you into a paid subscriber.

DuckDuckGo has passed 100 million searches in a single day

On January 11, 2021, DuckDuckGo broke the 100 million searches in one day milestone. While this pales in comparison to Google’s daily searches, it is still a significant step forward for DuckDuckGo and is a signal to marketers that more users value the privacy that DuckDuckGo offers. As more people continue to shift to privacy-based search platforms like this, SEO professionals will have to start adjusting their strategies.
