How using schema markup helps you improve your visibility online

Chances are, unless you have been heavily involved in search engine optimization (SEO) in the last couple of years, you don’t know much about schema markup. If this is the case for you, it’s time to learn what schema markup is all about.

What is schema markup?

Schema markup refers to structured data that search engines can read to explicitly understand the content of a page more clearly than they can identify through their crawlers alone. This enables search engines to better match pages to relevant search queries.

Additionally, using schema markup enables your page to show up in rich snippet results. These are those boxes of information you see on the right side of the search results in Google. Showing up in a snippet box is like showing up as the first search result but with more information and even some visuals. Users are very likely to engage with content in rich snippets.

Schema markup sounds complicated — How do I do it?

The phrase “structured data” can be a deterrent for any less technically inclined marketer (which is most of us). However, marking up structured data is a lot easier than you might think.

First, if you host your site on WordPress and use Yoast SEO, then you already have schema generating automatically. However, you can go into your Yoast editor to tune how you want it to pull and present information.

If you aren’t using Yoast, don’t worry. You can use Google’s Schema Markup Helper to highlight information on your page you want to mark up, and it will generate the data for you to paste into the webpage.
