Seven signs that your SEO strategy isn’t working

Search engine optimization (better known as SEO) has been a core part of digital marketing since the early days of digital marketing. The goal of SEO is to make your website more valuable to search engine users who use search terms relevant to your business or services.

However, despite your best efforts, your website may not be attracting the traffic you’d like. This could mean there is something in your SEO strategy that needs adjustment.

Here are seven signs your SEO strategy isn’t working and needs to be fine-tuned.

Seven signs that your SEO strategy isn’t working

  1. Your organic traffic is decreasing — If you are optimizing your content for search, your organic traffic should be one of the highest sources of web traffic when you review your website performance. If it isn’t, then you may need to adjust your keyword and content strategy. Take a look at your competitors and see what’s working for them to get an idea of what you may need to do.
  2. Keyword ranking is on the decline — Are you tracking keywords in tools like SEMRush, Moz or Google Search Console? If your keyword ranking is steadily on the decline, then you may need to update your content to outperform that of your competitors.
  3. Your conversion rates are low — One of the main goals of SEO is to attract traffic to your website, but what if that traffic isn’t doing anything when it arrives? It could still have something to do with SEO.
Your keywords may be optimized for the wrong type of traffic. You’re bringing in a lot of people, but they’re not interested in the goods or services your brand provides. In these circumstances, you need to review the keywords you’re optimizing for and replace them with ones more relevant to your audience’s interests.
  4. Your content is too thin — Short articles have their place, but they are often not found in the number one spot on search engine results pages (SERPs). Content that is longer and more informative is more likely to rank higher in SERPs.
  5. You have a high bounce rate — High bounce rates on your webpages are a problem for two reasons. First, your users are bouncing from your site without doing anything. And second, Google will see this and take it to mean that your site is not valuable to search engine users.
If your pages have high bounce rates, think of ways you can make them more engaging so users will stay active on your site.
  6. You have untrustworthy backlinks — Websites with quality backlinks pointing to them tend to rank well in SERPs. However, if low-quality backlinks from sketchy, spammy sites or link farms are pointing to your page, your site will take a hit in its performance.
Regularly examine the quality of your backlinks using tools like SEMRush to disavow any backlinks from sources you don’t want to be associated with.
  7. You are being impatient — SEO takes time. If you’re reading this article after a few days or weeks of launching a new site, you need to be a little more patient with your performance. SEO can take anywhere from three to six months to really show results. It’s possible to achieve good results sooner than that, but this is the exception, not the norm.
