Three Mistakes Everybody Makes With SEO

Three Mistakes Everybody Makes With SEO

search engine optimization

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a complex topic with many moving parts and considerations. There are three common mistakes that many businesses make regarding SEO.

Here are three mistakes everybody makes with SEO — so you don’t have to

Mistake #1: Using the wrong keywords

Search engine optimization begins with keywords, but if you don’t have the right keywords for your business, your strategy will fall flat. Long tail keywords are a key component of a successful SEO strategy, as they tend to match the way internet users search. Lots of businesses make a list of big keywords they rank for — for example, “solar panels” and “energy efficient” for a solar panel provider — without realizing that they’re entering a very crowded race. It’s also less likely that anybody looking for a solar panel company will search for “solar panels.” Instead, targeting keywords like “how much do solar panels cost?” and “where can you find solar panels in Phoenix?” will be less competitive and give the company a better chance of ranking in results, as well as better click-through rates.

Mistake #2: Using too many keywords

Keyword stuffing is a thing of the past, and over-optimizing for keywords will only lead to lower rankings in search results. Rather than focusing on the quantity of keywords in a page — also known as “keyword density” — strive to create individual pieces of content for each keyword and use it naturally throughout. Google in particular uses something called Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI), which actually “reads” the page to determine the topic and whether it’s relevant to the search. Keywords are important to helping this work, but you don’t have to stuff your copy with them to get the search engines to recognize what the page is about.

Mistake #3: Using the wrong content for your keyword

There can be such a push to publish a quantity of content on a regular schedule that companies forget to strategically build their content around their keywords. This means the search engines will have no way of knowing what your content is about, it won’t appear to meet the user’s needs, and it will rank poorly. Focus each page on a keyword and create content that actually addresses the user’s need surrounding the keyword. Searchers want to quickly find the page that answers their question. When you make it clear that yours can, and then actually do so, your relevance will be cemented.
