Is Google AMP still relevant for mobile sites in 2021?

  1. These pages are designed for speed — We’ve already said this once, but it needs to be reiterated: The AMP project is all about boosting mobile site speed. Speed is a vital factor for any type of website. But it’s particularly important for mobile sites. One survey reports that 40% of people will leave a page that takes more than three seconds to load. 
  1. It’s good for user experience — Another advantage of AMP is that it can help improve user experience on mobile sites. The reason is that it creates pages that are cleaner and simpler, which makes them easier for users to read and interact with. 

Two Google AMP disadvantages:

  1. It’s not a specific Google ranking factor — Google is moving to ranking sites based on core web vitals, and it has confirmed that AMP sites won’t automatically rank better. Using AMP principles can help improve core web vitals, but this isn’t the only way to improve them. 
  1. Your images and ads are limited — The simplicity that AMP promotes also means you can only place a limited number of images. Also, AMP only allows you to include one ad per page. This can make it harder to run pay-per-click (PPC) campaigns on your mobile site.
