If businesses still buy billboards, then why is digital marketing important?

If you’re a business owner, you’ve probably been told that digital marketing is a requirement for your future success. “That’s all well and good,” you may think, “but then why am I still seeing billboards, hearing radio advertisements and watching TV advertisements 10 years or more after someone told me they would be obsolete?”

The fact of the matter is that traditional marketing methods like billboards will probably continue to exist for decades to come because they are simple and they work. It’s up to each business to determine the marketing strategy that is best for them. However, this doesn’t mean that digital marketing isn’t important.

Reasons why digital marketing is important

Each year, more and more people use the internet to interact with businesses and shop than the year before. You should also realize that each year, the number of people who were born after the rise of the internet will increase. For people 25 years old and younger, the internet has always been around and digital forms of marketing are as normal, or more normal, than traditional channels. In 15 years, that statement will be true for everyone under 40, and so on.

This isn’t the only reason why digital marketing is important, however. Getting your message out over the internet, through your website, social media and online advertising, offers a number of advantages compared to a traditional platform like a billboard. Including:

  • A lower barrier to entry and the potential to be more cost-effective
  • More control over your message and a greater ability to educate your audience
  • A greater ability to reach a more targeted audience
  • More data to analyze and more flexibility to respond to changes

Finally, it’s important to understand that digital marketing and traditional marketing is not an either/or. Businesses can and should use both types to reach their audience and generate interest through positive feedback loops. As an example, most billboards today will feature a website or social media information to help build a bridge to the business’s digital efforts.
