SEO news: Week of August 3, 2020

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a fast-paced area of digital marketing. Staying on top of the latest news and developments in the industry is a critical part of success. With more information and less time than ever, it can be helpful to lean on the expertise and specialization of digital marketing professionals.

Since we spend a lot of time navigating the SEO world, we’re happy to share the most important SEO news items we come across. This week, we’ll cover Google’s latest updates to its structured data search results, how Bing ranks websites in search results and how Apple is stepping up to emphasize improving its search engine.

Structured data in Google search is now supporting home activities

Creating structured data for a webpage enables it to populate in Google search results as a rich snippet. These snippets contain information that is valuable to the user and are more likely to rank higher in search engine results pages (SERPs).

Likely due to the COVID-19 pandemic forcing people to stay at home more frequently than usual, Google is now adding an option for home activities in structured data. Examples of home activities that can be marked up in structured data include watching recorded videos, viewing livestreams and attending online events.

Bing shares some insights into how it ranks websites in search

Bing has been pretty open about what it considers when factoring search engine ranking. Recently, a couple of Bing webmasters talked with Search Engine Land about the importance of user engagement for their ranking.

Their crawlers put heavy emphasis on user engagement activities, such as click thoughts, clocking different results, changing the query and other forms of engagement. This is similar to Google’s outlook on user engagement. The lesson here is to make sure your site content is engaging and easy to read so that users will engage with it to help improve your search and their own user journeys.

Apple is stepping up its search engine game

Google has had a lot of success in the field of mobile search, partially because it is the default search engine for iPhones. However, Apple appears to be building its own search engine that will likely replace Google as the default, saving the company billions in fees.

Recently, Apple has been posting job announcements for search engineers, and it has updated its web crawler support page with new information about ranking. Webmasters need to keep their eyes on this as it develops because Apple may have its own search engine soon.
