Sales funnel conversions rates you want to see (and ones you don’t)

Sales funnel conversion rates are one of the terms that marketing and sales professionals throw around a lot. But, let’s say that you, like most people, aren’t a marketing or sales professional. Yet you are trying to figure out if you need to take action to boost your sales funnel conversion rates.

If you’re in this situation, then the first bit of information you’ll need to figure out is how good your sales funnel conversion rate actually is.

What is an average sales funnel conversion rate?

Every industry is different, so the average conversion rate of your sales funnel probably differs from companies in other industries. Yet there is actually an average conversion rate for all industries.

That average is a conversion rate of 3%.

This means that regardless of the industry you’re in, you should be turning at least 3% of the people who enter your sales funnel into customers.

What are exceptional and abysmal sales funnel conversion rates?

Let’s start with the bad news first. If your sales funnel is only bringing in conversions at a rate of less than 3%, then that’s bad. It indicates that there is a problem with your funnel that desperately needs to be addressed. One such problem is not bringing in enough organic traffic. You may also be missing conversion elements, such as forms, on website pages where your organic traffic is landing.

Now for the good news: If you have a sales funnel conversion rate of 3.1% to 5%, then your conversion rate is solidly in the good range. If your conversion rate is higher than 5%, your sales funnel is working exceptionally well.

2 ways you can boost your sales funnel conversion rate

It’s not uncommon for companies to want a better conversion rate from their sales funnel. That’s often true even if their conversion rate is solidly in the good or even exceptional range.

Fortunately, there are specific ways your company can boost its conversion rate, including:

  1. Increasing organic traffic to your website — Bringing in more organic traffic helps expose more potential customers to your products or services. Increasing your traffic can be easier than you may think if you’re doing it with content that explains how your company is addressing problems your potential customers have.
  2. Making it easier for visitors to convert — Increasing organic traffic won’t automatically lead to better conversion rates. Bringing lots of organic traffic to a page that lacks conversion elements or that has poorly designed conversion elements likely won’t help your conversion numbers. If that’s what’s happening on your website, you need to take a hard look at the conversion elements on the page in question. You’ll likely either need to add some or redesign them so that they’re easier to use.
