Social media marketing news: Week of October 19, 2020

Social media marketing continues to change the way we look at digital marketing as a whole on almost a weekly basis. With this communication platform offering new ways to interact with your audience and build a following, savvy marketers need to know the latest trends in the field.

We’re always coming across important social media marketing news as a direct result of our line of work, and we think it’s important to share what we come across with our partners. This week, we’ll cover some important information about social media and the Senate and some updates from Instagram.

Social media giants have been called to meet the Senate

Recently, representatives from Facebook, Twitter and even Google have been summoned by the U.S. Senate Committee to face a panel of senators who wish to question what Senate Republicans believe to be censorship of conservatives in social media.

It’s important to keep up to date with this hearing because it can result in some changes in the way that people and businesses can share messages on these platforms. The hearing is still in process as of this writing, but we’ll keep you up to date with any changes after the hearings are complete.

Instagram is removing the “Recent” tab from listings

As of October 29, 2020, Instagram is temporarily removing the “Recent” tab from its hashtag pages. Its stated objective is to reduce the spread of potentially harmful content that can pop up during the election.

This can give Instagram’s fact-checkers a boost in keeping up with identifying misinformation and keeping it out of its results, but it can also impact marketers and users who rely on the use of “Recent” content. Hopefully, this feature will be restored soon after the elections.

Instagram extends the limit for Instagram Live

Instagram has had a livestream feature that limited users to one hour of streaming at a time. Now, users can livestream on Instagram for up to four hours.

This is great news for marketers who do business through Instagram livestream, such as fitness instructors, musicians or educators.
