Search engine optimization (SEO) is a fast-paced area of digital marketing. Staying on top of the latest news and developments in the industry is a critical part of success. With more information and less time than ever, it can be helpful to lean on the expertise and specialization of digital marketing professionals.

Since we’re already spending our time immersed in the sea of SEO developments, we’re happy to share the most important SEO news items we come across. This week, check out stories including Google’s launch of a COVID-19 info site as well as the search giant’s pledge to switch to all mobile-first indexing by September. Finally we’ll take a look at how the coronavirus will be impacting major upcoming SEO conferences.

Google launches COVID-19 information site

With the ongoing spread of coronavirus, Google has launched a comprehensive information site as well as an updated search experience to help people find critical information about the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The goal of the page is to provide educational material and local resources in order to limit the spread of the virus.

In addition, Google has also updated its search experience to organize results related to the pandemic in a way designed to help users understand and contextualize helpful information. This update includes new graphical visualizations and data.

Mobile-first indexing transition targeted for September 2020 by Google

Google has been working on mobile-first indexing for a few years now. This means that the search engine algorithm will index and score the mobile version of the site before the desktop version. This is due to the continuing shift toward mobile search, as more people do their searches on mobile devices like smartphones. According to a recent news update from the search giant, 70% of the pages shown in search results have shifted over, with September of 2020 being the target for a full changeover.

Google continues to urge webmasters to follow its guidelines for mobile website optimization in order to provide mobile users with the full functionality and user experience of their desktop site.

SEO conferences are going virtual or being postponed

According to a recent article from Search Engine Journal, many major SEO and digital marketing conferences have been postponed due to guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on maintaining social distancing and restricting travel. Conferences affected include Pubcon Florida and SMX Munich. As a response, some conferences are announcing virtual conferences that are being held online, including Search Engine Journal’s own event, SEJ eSummit 2020.
